Which mode to choose for freight China
Road freight — 7–20 days
How the route runs: Irkeshtam → Torugart → Khorgos
From the western provinces trucks run through Kyrgyzstan — the Irkeshtam and Torugart crossings: the shortest way to Tashkent, but mountainous, and the passes close in bad weather in winter. From the eastern provinces and the coast the road is longer, through Kazakhstan and Khorgos, but without passes and on a steadier schedule.
By truck from China comes what needs to beat sea freight and undercut air: components and electronics, fabric and finished garments, fittings, appliances, retail goods. Often these are groupage consignments from several suppliers, assembled at a consolidation warehouse in Urumqi or Guangzhou.
What to watch on this lane
- In winter the passes at Irkeshtam and Torugart close in bad weather — allow a few days of slack for December to February, or route through Khorgos.
- Chinese holidays stop dispatch: warehouses are overloaded before Lunar New Year and nobody works for a week after it.
- A supplier’s packing is rarely built for a mountain road — we check it and repack at the warehouse before the consignment leaves.
- Groupage is charged on the greater of weight and volume: road freight counts about 333 kg to the cubic metre, so a light bulky load costs like a heavy one.
Rail freight — 18–35 days
How the route runs: Dostyk → Altynkol
The railway runs through the Kazakh crossings of Dostyk and Altynkol. The track gauge changes at the China–Kazakhstan border, so the container is transferred to another wagon — a routine operation, but the one that drives most of the variation in transit: in season the queue for transfer can run longer than the journey itself.
Rail from China carries volume: machinery and machine tools, metal and rolled stock, chemicals and raw materials, building materials, large production consignments. A container pays off where the load fills it and the schedule allows.
What to watch on this lane
- At Dostyk and Altynkol the gauge changes — the wagon is re-bogied or the cargo transhipped, and the queue for that operation drives the spread in transit times more than distance does.
- Timing depends on train formation: a single wagon waits for companions, a full container train runs to schedule.
- Machinery needs a securing plan — better agreed before loading than worked out at the transhipment point.
- Dangerous and temperature-controlled goods are documented separately by rail and are not always accepted — confirm the cargo class in advance.
Air freight — 3–7 days
How the route runs: Urumqi → Guangzhou → Shanghai → Beijing
Direct flights to Tashkent run from Urumqi, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. Air is chosen when the cargo is valuable or urgent: you pay several times more per kilo and get days instead of weeks. Restrictions are tighter than on land — lithium batteries, aerosols and liquids need separate handling under IATA rules.
Air from China carries what costs more standing still than flying: samples and first consignments, electronics and components for a halted line, spare parts, pharmaceuticals, high-value small goods for retail before a season.
What to watch on this lane
- The rate is charged on volumetric weight — a cubic metre counts as roughly 167 kg, so a large light carton costs like a heavy one.
- Lithium batteries, aerosols, liquids and powders travel under dangerous goods rules: a safety data sheet and specific packing are required, or the consignment is offloaded.
- Direct flights to Tashkent are few and part of the cargo moves with a connection — the transfer costs time and belongs in the quoted transit.
- Dimensions are limited by the aircraft door and hold height: long or oversized items do not fly, even when the weight would pass.
Sea and container freight — 30–50 days
How the route runs: Lianyungang → Qingdao → Ningbo → Dostyk
By sea the container leaves Lianyungang, Qingdao or Ningbo — but not for Tashkent: Uzbekistan has no coast, and neither do its neighbours. So the route is always combined: port, then rail or road through Kazakhstan. It is the cheapest option per tonne and the slowest.
By sea from China come large consignments where the unit price matters: furniture and household goods, tiles and sanitary ware, containerised equipment, raw materials, seasonal stock bought ahead.
What to watch on this lane
- The sea leg ends at a port — the cargo still travels overland to Uzbekistan, so the total time is the sum of legs, not the vessel schedule.
- Ocean rates swing with the season and line utilisation; a quote made a month ago may not hold at dispatch.
- Container demurrage at the port is billed separately — if the documents are not ready when the vessel arrives, the bill grows daily.
- Humidity inside a container ruins paper, cardboard and furniture: a long leg needs desiccants and proper stowage.

Cargo shipping from China or official import?
“Cargo” here means shipping by weight without a declaration: cheaper at the border, but the goods cannot go on your balance sheet, the VAT cannot be reclaimed and nothing can be sold under a contract. For a commercial consignment work out the full cost rather than the per-kilo rate: on an official import the duty and VAT are visible from the start, with grey shipping they surface later — as a fine, or as goods you cannot sell legally. We ship officially only: declaration, invoice, contract.
Shipping the other way?
We run that leg too: export clearance, plus the documents that spare your buyer the import duty.

Frequently asked questions
How does grey cargo differ from your shipping?
Grey cargo moves by weight without a declaration — cheaper at the border, but the goods cannot go on your balance sheet, the VAT cannot be reclaimed and nothing can be sold under a contract. We ship officially: declaration, duty, VAT, invoice. For a commercial consignment compare the full cost, not the per-kilo rate — at volume the official route often works out cheaper.
Which modes do you use from China?
Road freight, Rail freight, Air freight, Sea and container freight. We price the options and show the trade-off in cost and time.
How much does shipping from China cost?
The rate depends on weight, volume, cargo type and season. Send us the parameters and we will come back with a quote.
What documents are required?
Invoice, packing list, contract and the transport document — on this lane that means a CMR, an SMGS waybill, an air waybill, a bill of lading. We advise the full list for your specific cargo.
Do you handle customs clearance?
Yes, for cargo we carry ourselves: one company answers for both the transport and the customs, under one contract for the whole route. Cargo on this lane enters through Irkeshtam, Torugart, Khorgos and runs to the warehouse under customs transit. We do not take on customs clearance separately from carriage.
